In your 11 x 14” sketchbook, using photo-collage, make a narrative scene (Tell a story such as a fairy tale, fable, or myth.) that has deep space (depth). Your scene/story can be funny, fantastic, or realistic.
The composition you create will be used for a follow-up painting assignment.
Why:
Your objectives are to tell a clear story and to create a realistic sense of depth.
How:
Carefully cut along the contours of individual subjects in photographs, then arrange and glue them together.

The composition you create will be used for a follow-up painting assignment.
Why:
Your objectives are to tell a clear story and to create a realistic sense of depth.
How:
Carefully cut along the contours of individual subjects in photographs, then arrange and glue them together.
Requirements:
- Combine at least 8 things to tell your story.
- It must have at least three layers of depth:
- Two or more very big “things (objects, plants, people, animals, etc.) in the very close foreground. They should be big enough to fill about ¼ or more of the picture plane. These items can start below the edge of the picture plane.
- A middle ground with medium-sized “things”
- A far background (interior or exterior space) with smaller “things” to create a sense of place/environment.
Restrictions:
- No cartoons, clip art, drawings, etc. ONLY photographs..
- Don’t cut large sections out of a photo to use multiple people or other things together. Everything you add should be a separate, individual item, cut along its outside contours/edges.). Glue them together neatly to make a convincingly real combination of individual items.
Remember:
- As things are farther away, they get smaller.
- As things are farther away, you won’t see as much detail.
- Things in the foreground can overlap things in the background, but not vice versa.
- Closer things typically start lower on the paper than things that are farther away.
Tips:
- You may take and print some of your own photos to be used in this collage.
- Avoid using photographs where a person is looking directly at you, the viewer. The figures (people) should interact with each other, as in a movie scene or a candid photo.
- If you have one, use an X-acto knife and cutting board for precision in cutting along more detailed edges. You may work in the art room during flex block or study to use an X-acto knife.
Grading:
- Content (Clarity of Meaning) - Story is clear.
- Design - Visual Impact
- Sense of depth/space
- Craftsmanship/skill - Care in presentation
- Personal Investment
